Gilbert Wanami

Student - Released

Kamiti Maximum Prison, Kenya

Gilbert is a first-year LLB student at the University of London via Justice Defender's education program.

He was in remand for eight years – not yet convicted of a crime. Then given a life sentence. His first lawyer was not competent enough to represent him. So he handled his appeal with the help of fellow paralegals. And managed his own submission before the judge, getting his sentence reduced which factored in time spent in prison.

He was recruited as a student in 2018 from Shimo la Tewa Maximum Prison. Gilbert was transferred to Kamiti Maximum Prison so that he could begin his studies in May 2019.

Gilbert sat for his first examinations in October of 2019, Public Law and Legal systems and methods he performed well, in both.

He was released 12 May 2020 into the arms of his wife, Maureen.

"It has been a very challenging moment to be in prison, but having completed it… I feel I am a free man now and I am very happy that my family has accepted me," said Gilbert.
