Dignity, faith, and radical inclusion
Justice Defenders is founded on the conviction that every human being possesses inherent dignity and that those who have experienced the justice system most closely often have the greatest potential to become agents of justice themselves. Our work therefore combines high quality legal education and services with the development of leadership, responsibility, and service to others.
The organisation was shaped by Christian inspiration, including the belief that every life carries equal and inherent dignity and does not impose any particular faith on those who participate in its programmes. No one is required to adopt a religious belief in order to study law, train as a paralegal, receive legal services or become part of the Justice Defenders community. Participation in our training and services is open to people of all faiths and none.
At the same time, we recognise that many of the individuals we work with have experienced deep suffering, injustice, and loss. Legal knowledge alone is often not enough to support lasting change. Personal transformation frequently involves reflection, introspection, and a renewed sense of responsibility.
Although we are deeply aware that faith provides a meaningful framework for this reflection, there are participants in Justice Defenders' programmes who may prefer to engage in personal contemplation, study, or service to fellow prisoners. Across the prisons where we work, individuals practice their beliefs in different ways, and participation in any form of prayer or spiritual activity is always voluntary. However, we encourage them to be the best version of themselves and see their lives in perspective before society and family, respecting always their personal stand as an essential trigger for personal change.
Our commitment remains one of radical inclusion: welcoming people from every background and belief system, and working together to advance justice and human dignity for all.
