We're really excited to announce that African Prisons Project is part of Rebel Education, a new six-part documentary series by Al Jazeera.
Last summer, filming started on the series, looking at innovative learning models that are challenging the dominant ideas of education - particularly within challenging environments.
Episode five will follow our Director General, Alexander McLean, to three prisons in Kenya where some of our education programmes are operating, to find out how APP is transforming the lives of Kenyan prisoners. The documentary will be broadcast on Monday 6 February at 2230 GMT.
Prisons in Kenya and Uganda suffer from severe over-crowding with many prisons operating at 300% capacity. With nearly half of Kenya's population living below the poverty line, lack of education and opportunity contributes to high levels of crime. Alexander McLean states that:
"Very often, it's the poorest and least educated who find themselves in prison. And often their lives have been incredibly difficult and they've not had opportunities. And their inherent potential and gifts and talents have not been realised during their childhood or their adult life before entering prison."
Our legal education programme offers a formalised training programme enabling prisoners and prison staff to study law through the University of London’s International Academy. Through this we can provide legal support to prisoners who are denied access to justice because poverty prevents them from accessing legal support. We believe that educating people in prison in the law enables changemakers to have a positive impact on their communities and provides access to justice to some of the most vulnerable in society.
The documentary will feature many of our beneficiaries, both prisoners and prison staff, speaking about the impact our work is having on their lives and the prison community as a whole, and how developing leaders is bringing real transformative change.
