Africa Legal — From prison to the Bar

Justice Defenders recently celebrated the graduation of 47 individuals—34 with lived experiences of incarceration and 13 prison officers—who earned University of London LLB degrees. Held in Kenya’s Kamiti Prison and Uganda’s Luzira Upper Prison, the ceremonies celebrated the transformative power of legal education under the theme "Unlikely Allies: Transforming Prisons, Communities, and Justice, from Within."

These milestone events also honoured two previously incarcerated graduates, Hamisi Mzari and William Okumu, who were admitted as Advocates of the High Court of Kenya, embodying Justice Defenders’ vision of radical integration and justice transformation. These graduates are reshaping systems, breaking barriers, and building hope where it was once lost.
