OUR GOVERNANCE
Justice Defenders operates in a fractured world. Our work crosses borders, justice systems, and legal traditions. Our governance is built to match that reality.
We are grounded locally and accountable globally. Our board and leadership reflect the communities where we work and the people we are accountable to. We steward funding carefully, make decisions transparently, and meet the highest standards of oversight and accountability.
This ensures power is shared, decisions are shaped by lived experience of incarceration, and every resource is directed towards expanding access to justice.
HOW WE ARE STRUCTURED
Justice Defenders in the UK (charity number 1121764) is a subsidiary entity of Justice Defenders USA (EIN 36-4787320).
Together, we form a single global organisation working to expand access to justice and equip people in prison and prison staff to become paralegals and lawyers.
We currently work in Kenya and Uganda, with plans to scale to the United States and United Kingdom. Every gift entrusted to Justice Defenders is stewarded with care, aligned to the global mission and directed to where the need is greatest.
HOW WE ARE GOVERNED
Justice Defenders operates under a unified Governing Board that brings together leaders and representatives from the countries where we work. This ensures strong oversight, contextual intelligence and accountability at every level.
Our governance model intentionally integrates multicultural and multidisciplinary perspectives. This allows us to respond to country-specific needs while advancing a shared global strategy rooted in dignity, due process and lived-experience leadership.
The Board provides oversight in the areas of strategy, finance, safeguarding, legal compliance and organisational development, ensuring that Justice Defenders operates with integrity, transparency and long-term sustainability.
